If only I could really express how badly these events bode for the future of humanity.
These people are investing billions into A.I. infrastructure. Not just to make things more efficient, not just to automate work. They’re doing it to weaken labor’s bargaining power. To build a world where dissent can be managed instantly. Algorithmically. With distraction, pressure, and a thousand tiny levers that redirect blame away from the people actually responsible.
If you understood how little the people with power care about you, it would set off alarm bells. Not just indifference. In many cases they actively resent needing your consent to rule over you at all.
They’re waiting. Biding their time until systems exist that let them discard large portions of the public without consequences. And they’ll do it with the support of those who still have enough, condemning those who don’t.
As the economy shifts further away from the middle class and concentrates at the top, they won’t even need convincing statistics anymore. One server farm can feed us all the soothing narratives required to tell us everything is normal while the temperature keeps rising.
If you think you and your family are safe because you work hard and mind your business, you have far more faith in them than history suggests they deserve.
They’re bombing children in full view of the world while explanations and distractions are manufactured in real time, as they defend and distract from child sex traffickers, not from “both sides” but from the same economic class. And if you’d like a small piece of the machine, they even offer that too. Just invest in the weapons companies. Suddenly war becomes profitable. Why protest when you can get a return on the missiles?
And while all of this is happening, social media companies tell us they allow extreme content because “it drives engagement.” Which conveniently keeps us locked into reinforcing whatever we already believe about the other side. The result is that fewer and fewer people even ask whether the picture they’re seeing is complete.
Oh right. I’m an artist.
So I can say these things through fiction. Because people can tolerate uncomfortable ideas a lot easier when they’re wrapped in a story.
And if they don’t like it, they can always dismiss it as just another piece of art.
